It's been a couple months since we've been fed with news about the new Star Wars-based MMORPG called
The Old Republic and a lot of us are already impatient to play it.
For those about to ask, MMORPG stands for
You Spend Your Free Time and Your Money Into an Online Virtual World Full of Bored Teenagers Repeating The Same Tasks Over And Over though some of you might disagree. In other words: TOR will be a pay-to-play game (about $15 every month, kids will need their parents' consent) which means that if you don't have a job, don't have rich parents and are still in school
YOU SHOULD NOT BUY THIS GAME.
Other specifics that I don't want to see discussed again:
- PC ONLY (no XBOX, no PS, no Wii, no DS, no Dreamcast) because let's face it: I hate consoles. I don't even want to explain to you how upset they make me. Please, you can already stop being my friend if you love your consoles.
- Will be another year or so before it's ready (my best bet: Fall 2010)
- Revan and Bastila are DEAD.
- Hardware requirements should be rather basic due to stylized graphics
- It's Pay To Play and that is a
good thing: you're paying to be in the game, that means
you make it worth your while by enjoying it and making friends with it OR you decide the game is wasting your time and money so you stop paying and you get your life back. Some people can handle both...
So I expressed my enthusiasm about the Sith characters but apparently you'll be able to do a lot more in that game and among those things I
really hope housing is being considered seriously. Also, only 4 planets are announced but what about the rest of the more famous places? I'm also worried the game will be more
Theme Park than
Sand Box because of the KoTOR series which is extremely story driven and there really is no way around that. You have to accept whatever NPC in your team or else you won't go any further, too. I mean, okay it's RPG but that is kind of cheap.
Of course only time will tell but the issue here is that I'm suffering from Star Wars deprivation (no conventions, no show, no book, no games...) and the TOR forums are the closest SW-related stuff I get these days. Not exactly smart to anticipate something who's far from going into Beta.
Many thanks, too, for taking all that time to crit the LOTF piece, and for the
FF
